SAP/EHS/HSAP <<XYLINA>> 1904,1914,1923

The term XYLINA is used to describe the wooden body trainsets that were used from 1904 to 1985 in Peraeus-Kifissia line, now the line No.1 of Athens metro network.
They were bought in three batches from 1904 to 1923.

FIRST BATCH-1904;
The first EMUs in Greek railway history were ordered in 1901 by the Σ.Α.Π. and were built by THOMSON HOUSTON DE LA MEDITERRANEE.Twenty powered vehicles and twenty trailers were ordered, all Bo'Bo' with top speed around 65km/h.

SECOND BATCH-1914;
This batch contained nine cars built by BAUME MARPENT, similar to the older ones but with some differences in their design.

THIRD BATCH-1923;
The twelve cars that were bought in 1923 were ordered again to BAUME MARPENT but were built in Peraeus works (not Κ.Ε.Π.), so their cost was reduced by 30%.

AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR;
After the war ended, the Ε.Η.Σ. decided to rebuild all their electric rolling stock (like ALL the other railway companies did in Greece).So, all the 61 cars were rebuilt.The changes were mostly in the outer part rather than the engines.Their service ended in 1985.They were the powered units with the most years in service in Greece,and imagine that one STILL WORKS.Although most of them still worked in 1985,they were withdrawn because the electricity system changed to 750V.

TODAY;
Today, in 2018 only one six car trainset works.All the others that were not used as ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΑΚΑ were given to organisations, clubs, libraries etc.. One remarkable thing is also that one powered unit was rebuilt again and became the ONLY ONE electric powered freight car ever built (when I say freight car, freight means that it transferred tools etc. during the night shift when the line is being repaired etc.). The ones that were not given were two.One is in Peraeus and Rentis Depot in bad condition and one is in Peraeus Depot (again not the PDS/SEK/OSE one but the SAP/EHS/HSAP one).The last was used until 2000 in some Sundays.Now, because the electricity system changed again to 850V :evil: , the unit is gradually being destroyed......Another example is/was the XYLINO of Kalamata Park..............

Hi Everyone,

Georgegala, you took a good initiative to create a topic for the EHΣ/ΗΣΑΠ stock; it's true, we have somewhat neglected this chapter of the Greek railways.

Note a few corrections though:

- The 'XYLINA' usually circulated in consists of five and not six cars, at least when they were used in the entire journey (Piraeus to Kifissia). Six car consists were introduced towards the end of their carreer...
- A few unpowered pilot units were divided in two compartments; the one closest to the driver was designated as 'Luggage Car' (ΣΚΕΥΟΦΟΡΟΣ) and had no seats. It was mostly used by smoking passengers
- Three-car consists were commonplace when they were running 'local' services to Ano Patissia, Nea Ionia and Irakleion.
- Sadly enough, the 'XYLINA' were preferably used in the early 80s for local services to 'Eirini (Olympic Stadium)', especially when there was an important football game, anticipating possible acts of vandalism - which has indeed occurred...

Thank you very much.It was a bit difficult to find all the information, so there are mistakes.As for the six car trainsets,you are right.40 cars can't be divided to an equal number of six car EMUs (I had read it in a website).Now I edited the post.
