On the 9th of September 2003, I received a letter from Christoph S. of SCHOEMA LOKOMOTIVEN asking me to build them some models. Together with the letter, were two 1/10 scale drawings and some work photos. The technology of the time coupled up with my knowledge did not make this feasible. However, earlier on this year I found a dimensionally almost perfect chassis, so ten days ago I started drawing the locomotive in 3D. I am now ready for the first test print in HOe.

PS. And if I play my cards right ;) , BarbaP will paint it for me. I haven't told him yet I will make both locomotives, though I am tempted to make one in OO9 to match with the Bachmann OO9 stock.

It looks really great Christo, I'm looking forward to paint it
All we are going to need is a couple of coaches and Jonmood to build Milies Station :D

Nice model Christo,
Let me make one or two thoughts, using my experience of using 3d prints, gained during Faur model development.
1.The loco model body must be clear enough of extruded items so an easy and succesfull sanding could be performed. Think that the original is gloss black.
2. Radiator screen should be photo etched. The printed one is somehow coarse.
3. Avoid making handrails and "rings" (like that above lights) from printing material. They are too fragile and thick.
Go on, it is promising

Stefane

I welcome your comments and thank you for the encouragement.

The printed version has already been ordered without the lights.

The lights, buffer heads and bogie sideframes are in a separate print.

I have also produced some 0.3mm etched brass jigs for positioning over the body for correct drilling of handrails over the face and sides of the bonnet. I can either do it myself or provide the metal wire for others to do.

Though I had considered designing an etched grille,I decided against it because I can not see how it can be placed in a spherical opening. So I will have to live with this compromise.
The best way to make it will be to solder wire over a wooden former but maybe someone else cam offer this refinement as an improvement kit.

Finally, let me reassure you that I have by now produced half a dozen locomotives and a number of parts in 3d plastics and I am painfully aware ($$$$) of their properties :D .

Christo making a plane circular photo etched screen spherical isn't so difficult as you may think. Just to press it on spherical surface with apropriate radius using a ruber eraser.
I could help you.

Sounds great Stefane though I still fail to understand how a 2d surface becomes a 3D one without distortion. Is there anywhere on the net/youtube I can read/see about this technique or do you have an old scrap of etched brass that you could demonstrate?

Christo it is a 2d brass screen not a 2d surface. It isn't the same case. The most difficult thing is to find the spherical surface of appropriate radius. The radius must be a bit smaller than the radius of the design radius. And the circumferance must be a bit bigger than the design circumferance. I can help you. Provide me the brass screens and I will form the spherical surface with the lathe.
As I am not keen on youtube and internet I don't have any site to show you the method.
